GADGETS Sony PlayStation Move

THIS CHRISTMAS GONNA BE INTERESTING

Sony PlayStation Move
Japanese gaming giant Sony makes a strong play for Nintendo Wii market share with their latest announcement. The PlayStation Move motion controller (for PS3) functions much like Nintendo’s Wii Remote and Nunchuck, working in conjunction with the PlayStation Eye camera and a sub-controller – though Sony claims their version is much more accurate. And you can play in HD. We’ll have to wait and see if this can compete with a traditional controller/Wii gaming. The PlayStation Move releases sometime this Fall.

I NEED THIS

What’s the one thing external hard drives have been missing all these years? If you answered “a screen,” perhaps the Western Digital My Passport Studio ($150-$200) is for you. Available in 320, 500, and 640GB capacities, these sleek silver drives feature both FireWire 800 and USB 2.0 interfaces, Time Machine support for the Mac users out there, and a super-crazy, e-paper “label” on the outside that lets you know details like remaining capacity, whether the drive is locked, and, to help with drive organization, a personalized label to help you keep track of its contents.

GADGETS Celsius X VI II Papillon Mechanical Mobile Phone

I KNOW I POST ALOTTA CRAZY STUFF BUT THIS MIGHT TAKE THE CAKE, A 300,000 DOLLAR PHONE WTF DOES IT DO?

Luxury watch makers have been in the mobile phone world for a little while with such models atTag Heuer Meridiist and the Ulysse Nardin Chairman, but these are mostly fancy items on the outside with traditional mobile phone hardware on the inside. The Papillion phone by Celsius X VI II (10 6 2) is going to take the convergence of these devices a few steps further. The result? Well it is still just a teaser now. You can see the “x ray” image above of what the item will look like on the inside.

Is the Papillon going to be particularly useful? Probably not. Hopefully it will be very cool though. The concept reminds me a bit of Roland Iten items. But then again I think his over-engineered daily use items are more practical as well as luxurious. The Papillon is probably going to be as close to what we will ever get as a mobile phone Transformer. It might not morph into an evil robot from another planet, but it sure will be filled with bona fide mechanical guts. The Celsius X VI II Papillion mechanical mobile phone will be officially debuted at Baselworld soon. I will be there and be able to check out this roughly $300,000 luxury item hands-on.

GADGETS Sony Alpha DSLR

GOTTA GET ONE, THESE SHITS GONNA BE TUFF

It might still be in the concept stage, but that doesn’t mean we can’t dream about having a Sony Compact Alpha DSLR ($TBA) in our bag or pocket. Powered an Exmor APS HD CMOS sensor, these compact concepts also offer interchangeable lenses, DSLR-level controls, and full AVCHD video capability for high-quality HD video capture. Expect a fairly hefty price tag if/when these become available.

GADGETS Samsung TL500

NEW PIECE TO CHECK OUT
Samsung TL500

Perhaps designed to be a Canon S90 killer, the Samsung TL500 ($450) is the latest point-and-shoot to adopt several DSLR-level features. Among these are a 24mm, 3x optical zoom, f/1.8 Schneider lens, Aperture priority, Shutter priority, and Manual shooting modes, dual image stabilization, RAW support, a 10 megapixel, 1/1.7-inch CCD, and a front control wheel. Unfortunately video shooting is limited to 640×480, but the gorgeous, swiveling 3-inch AMOLED LCD should more than make up for it.

GADGETS SONY CYBER-SHOT TX5

THIS SOUNDS LIKE THE NEW CLUB CAMERA

Sleek, stylish, and tough aren’t words that normally describe the same product, but they’re certainly applicable to the Sony Cyber-shot TX5 ($350). The TX5 offers many of the same features found in the company’s flagship TX7 compact — including an Exmor R CMOS sensor, Sweep Panorama mode, HD video recording (720p, instead of the TX7’s 1080i), a touchscreen LCD, 10fps shooting, and Optical SteadyShot image stabilization — but packs them into a rugged body that’s dust proof, waterproof to 10 feet, and shockproof to 5 feet.

GADGETS Microsoft Windows Phone 7 Series

YES ANOTHER NEW PHONE

Microsoft Windows Phone 7 Series is a complete re-build of Windows Mobile, with a spartan interface replacing the clutter that had become synonymous with the platform. Key features of the new OS are a series of “hubs” dedicated to specific activities, including one for people that integrates contact information with that person’s various online social networking accounts; a pictures hub for viewing, sharing, and taking pictures and video; a hub for games that offers complete integration with Xbox LIVE; the new music and video hub that borrows heavily from the Zune HD to offer complete Zune functionality and competent media playback; a new marketplace hub for purchasing and downloading new applications; and an Office hub for all you productivity types.

WOW!!!! THEY GOIN HAM WITH THESE APPS

Whether you’re running a small business, gearing up for your summertime lemonade stand, or simply want a way to process the door charges at your next multi-kegger, Square can help. This new service uses a small headphone port-connecting card reader and accompanying iPhone app to allow you to accept credit, debit, and pre-paid gift card payments anywhere you have an Internet connection. The customer signs with their finger, and can even have the receipt sent directly to their e-mail account. Beats the hell out of the ol’ metal cash box.
