If congress and the right wing republicans would stop bull shiting and pointing fingers and work together things may turn around sooner. It is not just people in "da hood" suffering; it's middle class, upper middle class etc. In all fairness to President Obama, I really don't think he knew what he was getting into. The 8 years under the Bush administration did major damage to this country's economy, damage that cannot be repaired in a blink of an eye. It is gonna take a loooooong time. As far as bottle service, I cannot relate to complaining about something so insignificant and trivial when people are losing jobs, homes and sometimes their sanity. Neighbors who are concerned about what is going on in their neighbor have to make the change. We have to stand up and fight for our neighborhood and children. Our parents didn't have much growing up and we have to go back to buying only those things that are needed. We can't go out and buy things that cost more than our weekly paycheck to keep up with the Jones'. We are going to have to make changes in everything we do! We may have to plant a garden for food, buy material and make our owns clothes. Communicate with each other and when we have to go places and don't have gas money, ride share is the answer. I don't understand the purpose of this post (This is not a slam on JD because I think he's quite talented and intelligent). This isn't something new cause the poor communities in South Florida have always been poor and violent. The housing and construction boom of the mid 2000's completely skipped over these areas. You never saw any economic development or new jobs created here. The robberies and killings often pour into nearby areas depending on the time of the year. I also see that some many have become entrenched in counter-culture that they are doing the opposite of everything that could be elevating them. I did volunteer work in an impoverished area in downtown Miami in 2004. I was shocked at how people in this community were living and it had NOTHING to do with being poor. These people were living in their own filth and refusing to do anything about it. How about sweeping the damn floor? Cutting your grass? Washing your damn dishes? How about getting some bug spray so roaches aren't crawling and biting your children? Why are you giving your infant kool-aid? I was so disgusted at the blatant ignorance that I had to quit. There was no way to save these people. In fact, I wanted to take all of those children myself because growing up like this was going to destroy their futures. Madonna is running off to Africa to get a black baby? She needs come to Miami because they are many who are growing up in worse conditions. Many of us who had the resources moved out and into new communities or bought our first houses. WE, Black people got so caught up in the fact that WE finally had the "HNIC" that we totally forgot the "true" essence of what really was going on in the background of our foreground. As my grandmother use to say, "Never let your right hand know what your left is doing". I heard commentators say that the Obama Presidency is historical..........I beg to differ! If we remember the "true" Black History lessons that we were taught (most real Black History was taught not in school, but by parents and others that were of the progressive-Black Power Movement of the 60's & 70's), the only roles that Black people were allowed to have in the White House was in a domestic capacity.....the "clean up" crew. What is Obama doing? Cleaning up the "others" mess. It is by no chance also that he is bi-racial. Weren't they the "official house Negros"? Aside from habit, what we as a people need to recognize is that the tools needed to endure, survive, and maintain during seemingly disastrous times were long ago passed down to us. It has been our own obsession to mimic the "status quo" that has gotten our people to our current state. The Great Depression was a worldwide economic downturn starting in most places in 1929 and ending at different times in the 1930s or early 1940s for different countries. I remember the stories from my grandmother of how they use to embrace family and did everything as a unit to ensure their survival. There were no cable bills, cell phones, weaves, iPods, or any other wants. We have changed the definitions of what is a "need" as compared to a "want". True change begins from within. Has Dr. King's dream been realized? I would say No, simply because for that to be true would mean that the "Hearts" of the majority have been changed. Prejudice and racism are rooted in the heart and for that to change would require a spiritual awakening. Then and only then can one free their mind in order to allow their ass to follow. Vanity has historically been the fall of man. WuTang said it best.....cash rules EVERYTHING around me....dolla dolla bill yall! Our people have taken allegiance with the "beast" in his misguidance. What comes out of the man determines his worth. Real begets real......superficial begets superficial. It isn't enough anymore to be "da man" on your block or in your hood. Your block and your hood ain't shit in the whole global respect of things. Everything is a building block to something much greater than yourself. But those of you who are hell bent on still hangin', bangin', and slangin' have to recognize that "Truth" starts on the inside. By confining yourselves to a 12 miles radius, "da hood" you short yourself the opportunity view the world in its totality. Life, isn't isolated to ATL, Philly, Chicago, LA, Little Rock, Jackson, Brooklyn, Queens.........Last time I looked, those were only microcosms with in a larger cosim, contained in an even larger cosim. No, you or I may not be a President or City Council Member, but we are still responsible for our own little "White or Black" house. Begin first with the house that houses your soul.......YOU! Then handle your own house.........wife, kids, mother, father, grandfather, grandmother.......begin to heal needless wounds so that everyone is on the same page. A house divided cannot stand. If OUR forefathers were able to withstand the Transatlantic Slave trade, Jim Crow, Segregation, The Great Depression, separation, etc..................Then WHO IN THE HELL ARE WE TO COMPLAIN, GIVE UP, AND BE DEFEATED? We (black folks) are really prideful people and we are used to making something out of nothing..but this type of "nothing" is not what we expected. Not that the recession came out of nowhere, but you know we are going to run and get some new J's before we stack money up for a rainy day... and much of that comes from being able to hustle and get money day in and day out. But, you can't get even get in the streets and hustle now like you could two or three years ago. And you are so right, things are escalating and title are changing - drug dealers have turned into thieves because no one has money to smoke this or hit that - thieves are turning into murderers because folks are so desperate and don't have ANYTHING. Man JD, for the first time in my life I have seen people without Souls. If you don't have a soul, you don't have a conscious and that means you will do whatever, whenever, however! Think about it, its folks in middle class America offing their entire family because they have no money, medical insurance and are behind on their mortgage. I could go on forever - but I hope Obama and his Administration have something powerful lined up. I know things can't change over night but something promising has be established and presented to the masses to prevent the type of catastrophic stuff that could potentially go down in neighborhoods across America.
